AIRA Leadership Team Holds Summer Meeting

The AIRA senior leadership team held a two-day business meeting June 26-27, 2006 in Boulder, Colorado. The meeting jointly hosted by NCAR and NOAA was held at NCAR’s Foothills Laboratory.

Topics on the agenda included the following:

  • Review of current AIRA organizational structure and processes including potential modifications/improvements.
  • Discussion on potential research topics that might be supported by AIRA. Separate discussions were held on icing needs related to (1) propulsion systems, (2) rotorcraft, and UAV’s.
  • Review of the plans for AIRA’s 2007 Research Implementation Forum (RIF). The 2007 RIF will be held on Monday, January 8, 2007 in Reno, NV as part of the AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting.

Part of the meeting involved a tour of the NSF/NCAR Research Aviation Facility (RAF) located at Jefferson County Airport. Mr. David Rogers, NCAR Scientist at RAF, gave AIRA members an in depth tour of the two research aircraft, a C130Q (below left) and Gulfstream G5 (below right).

These aircraft are used by NCAR to conduct a wide variety of atmospheric research programs.
