As part of its series of project formulation activities, AIRA sponsored a session on propulsion system icing — challenges and
research opportunities — at the 2007 International Gas Turbine Institute
(IGTI) conference sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
(ASME). This conference was held May 14-17, 2007 in Montreal, Canada.
AIRA members believe we have put together a session featuring some of the acknowledged experts in the field, who will provide interesting and informative overviews of various aspects of the challenge set as well as the programs being planned which will address these challenges.
One of the areas of growing interest within the international icing community is that of turbofan engine performance and operability in icing conditions especially the so-called "mixed conditions," a term which denotes an icing cloud which contains not only super cooled water droplets but also ice crystals.
AIRA has identified this area as one on which the group should focus its attention by formulating, planning, and conducting a collaborative research program that will contribute to an increased understanding of propulsion system icing.
