In order to realize the mission of AIRA it is necessary to establish agreed upon priorities for icing research and to foster collaboration in the research that addresses these priorities. AIRA values collaborative involvement from outside groups and encourages research collaborations among the AIRA signatories.
The following is a process to establish and review AIRA research priorities, extend AIRA member-led research projects to involve other agencies, as well as a description of a forum where research project initiators outside of AIRA can present initiatives and seek collaborative involvement from AIRA and from non-AIRA groups.
Annually the AIRA Executive Steering Committee will organize an Icing Research Implementation Forum. This will normally be held in conjunction with a scientific conference that would attract a large portion of the icing research community on its own, for example, the AIAA Annual Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit. The first part of this meeting will be focused on the presentation of the AIRA Priority Research Areas. This discussion will be led by the Working Subcommittee (WSC). This will include a presentation of the Priority Research Areas and a discussion on alternative directions for research focus. By this process a consensus on the adoption of new directions for research priorities will be engendered and the icing research strategic direction will evolve.
The second part of this meeting will be a presentation of AIRA member-led research initiatives that are planned for the immediate future. The Principal Investigators will describe each project and outline its relevance with respect to the Priority Research Areas. General discussion will be held to identify mechanisms by which other groups can become involved in these particular research projects. This involvement will be particularly welcomed if it can be demonstrated that value will be added to the research, especially in line with the Priority Research Areas.
The third part of the meeting will be a presentation of research initiatives by non-AIRA members. These may be projects that are well developed in terms of research plans and membership. Alternatively they could be projects of a more nascent flavor whereby champions propose a course of action for community feedback and possible involvement. The principal intent of this part of the meeting is to involve AIRA and non-AIRA members in the research, and to the greatest degree possible, address the Priority Research Areas. Aside from the possible extension of the research through the discussion held at this meeting, the PI might also benefit from having their research ideas critiqued and further developed through the discussions.
